Spot and short-term freight rates in the all-important Far East-Europe trade are set for a steep increase in the short run in a move that will particularly hit small and medium-sized shippers and freight forwarders without annual fixed-rate agreements. Container lines, desperate to bolster earnings in the final quarter, following a severe rate erosion in recent weeks, are rallying to enforce general rate increases of $750-l,000/teu, effective from 1 November.
