While Singapore's shipping ecosystem has come a long way since 1996, when the city-state began its push to be an international maritime centre, it's unlikely to overtake London as shipping's capital city anytime soon. The development of maritime education in Singapore, especially at the tertiary level, is continuing - Nanyang Technological University only began offering maritime studies in 2004. "London will remain the capital of the business," agued Denis Petropoulos at Braemar Seascope. "Singapore's growth may be spectacular but the history and depth of the people involved in the business in London is enormous." "Whether you like it or not, Europe will still have to depend on London for services and information. "So London will continue to be a powerhouse in the west and Singapore will be a powerhouse in the east."
