Mombasa port in Kenya registered a 24% increase in container traffic in the first half of 2012, so the expected completion of another container berth by the end of the year will help prevent a recurrence of the congestion problems experienced until recently. Early in 2011, ships were reported to be taking an average of 6.2 days to berth and offload, while thousands of containers were trapped at the port waiting for clearance. However, Capt Twalib Khamis, Kenya Port Authority's (KPA's) operations manager, told Fairplay that this year the port has operated more efficiently, with no ships having to wait to unload.
