News that France has announced a major offshore wind development programme, following similar announcements by other Atlantic seaboard nations, has intensified the race to identify mass production sites for the thousands of turbines required by the projects. In January, President Sarkozy announced tenders for five wind energy zones off France's Atlantic and Channel coasts, which are expected to provide up to 3GW of capacity. Big-name energy and engineering firms are likely to table bids for the right to develop the zones.
