Despite competition from its neighbours, Singapore's status as a regional shipping hub has remained firmly intact over the years. Intra-Asia container and shortsea trading are co-ordinated from Singapore and many shipowners have based themselves in the republic to run their operations from here. Besides the republic's flagship carrier Neptune Orient Lines, more than 70 shipping companies operate in Singapore and almost half of them have foreign origins.
