China has pledged to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 to about 40% of the level in 2005 and ports have to been told to play their part. Cold ironing is one of the ports' preferred tools to help reduce emissions. Yanming Gao, vice-president of the China Ship Owners' Association (CSOA), has calculated that cold ironing would save 300M tonnes of fuel a year, reducing annual emissions of CO_2 by 9.17M tonnes, SO_2 by 126,000 tonnes and NOx by 195,000 tonnes.
