Busan president Ki Tae Ron is satisfied with the pace the world's fifth-largest container port has achieved in transferring activity from the old North Port to its New Port development. If the established trend continues, half the business will have been shifted away from the centre of Busan city. During the year, work on Phase 2 of the New Port will be completed and operations should begin. This is likely to increase Busan New Port's share of overall volume (and Busan Port's overall throughput) with its annual handling capacity of 2.7M teu. Significantly, this phase includes a 12% investment by French carrier CMA CCM. This is the line's first South Korean port investment. New Port's productivity will be boosted by CMA CGM's anticipated use of this terminal as a guaranteed, low-cost, efficient berthing facility for its own ships.
