A plan to overhaul a former US Army base at the Port of Oakland is building up a head of steam and raising the port's prospects of becoming a tough competitor in the trans-Pacific supply chain. On 10 November the port and the city of Oakland unveiled the initial phase of a billion-dollar expansion project on 68ha of land controlled jointly by the two entities. The S438M first phase includes building an intermodal rail yard, restoring Oakland's only deepwater breakbulk terminal and building new trade and logistics facilities for warehousing within the port.
