Shippers are facing a barrage of general rate increases on Asian outbound routes as box lines scramble to reverse recent sharp drops in container freight rates. Their efforts are focused on the high-volume Asia-Europe trade, where a large proportion of cargo is moving under spot and short-term contract rates that have steadily trended down since July. The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SFCI) shows a drop of about 30% on spot freight ex -Shanghai to North Europe since then.
