Miami has a not-so-secret weapon that it is using to quietly shed its image as the main portal into the US-Caribbean and Latin American markets: authorisation by the US government to dredge to 15m (50ft).rnIt's not the only weapon in the Port of Miami's arsenal it is hoping to use to attack Asian imports with the Panama Canal expansion looming in 2014. Officials there unveiled on 20 August a $47M renovation of rail track leading from the port to Florida East Coast Railroad's yard in nearby Hialeah, a major cargo hub that will speed box cargo in and out of the port. It's also building a $ 1 Bn highway tunnel under Biscayne Bay to expand container drayage to and from the port.
