The European Community Shipowners'Associations (ESCA) has called on the industry to go back to basics and use the global crisis to restore order to shipping investments and avoid speculation.rn"Investments in shipping should be left to genuine shipping professionals and not be dominated by financial institutions, speculative investments and paper trading," secretary general Arfons Guinier told Fairplay.rnHe called for stricter rules to govern international financial dealings but warned against protectionism: "If you revive protectionism in shipping, the results will be disastrous for everybody, for good and bad operators alike and for world trade. We have always said that protectionism is deadly for shipping, we have seen that in previous decades. I think we are the most liberal industry in the world. The temptation to introduce protectionist measures such as flag prescription should be avoided at all costs," Guinier warned.
