Container shipping is set for a period of consolidation, with the larger players growing even stronger, forecasts CMA CGM founder and chairman Jacques Saade. In a statement outlining prospects for the coming year, the Marseilles-based head of the third largest liner company insisted that trade between Asia, Europe and the US will grow.rnThe new challenge for container companies comes from freight forwarders. According to Thomas Lieb, chairman of the management board of Schenker: "Over the past four years, the market share of the top four container shipping companies has grown by 4.3%. During that same period, the market share of the top four ocean freight providers grew by 18.8%." Forwarders buy large chunks of capacity from container shipping lines, add other services in their offering and charge their cus-rntomer a significant premium as a result. This means shipping lines lose out on the high end of the market.
