One issue at last week's European Sea Port Conference in Marseilles dismayed EU transport specialists and caused great frustration among Mediterranean port officials: the bizarre situation in East-West trade whereby 70% of boxes that enter the Med via the Suez Canal are shipped past southern Europe and taken all the way to northwestern ports. It is a continuing waste of bunker oil, creating unnecessary ship emissions, not to mention contributing greatly to congestion in north European hubs, the EU officials said.
