Statisticians calculate the shipping industry is heading for a shortage of officers, deck and engine, which will become critical within a few years. Although the economic downturn has led to cancellation and postponement of orders, hot and cold lay-ups and employment uncertainty, it appears the shortage is already with us.rnFaIrplay will look at the current state of crewing from a number of different perspectives. A 2008 survey of life at sea found that while pre sea training was judged to be good or very good, preparing cadets well, there are misgivings about the quality of cadets coming through and the pace at which they are promoted.
