The Hennepin sank in Lake Michigan in 1927, but the discovery of its wreck in 2006 brought a realisation of its significance as the forebear of virtually every modern freshwater and saltwater self-unloading vessel. It was owned by Lake Shore Stone when, in 1902, it was fitted with an A-frame, conveyor boom and below-deck conveyors to handle crushed stone.rnStarting with the history of this vessel, its conversion, loss and underwater examinations of its wreck, the authors have documented more than a century of technical advances in self-unloading technology.
