Last week, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) won its first newbuilding order for almost a year, although the contract is unlikely to set the world on fire.The new order, for a 19,100dwt barge for use in the deployment of offshore structures was placed by Netherlands-based offshore contractor Heerema Marine. This should be encouraging news for an industry where new business in the past few months has been more or less nil. DSME last received an order back in August 2008 when Kuwait Oil Tanker Co contracted for a VLCC quartet. Of Daewoo's compatriot shipyards, Samsung Hi's last order was received in November 2008 (for a pair of drilling ships) while none of the Hyundai group shipyards has signed a new-building contract since September.
