Glenda A International Shipping pulled out of a newbuilding contract at South Korea's SLS Shipbuilding this week, ending a deal that seemed a bargain at the time (Fairplay 24,22 June). Glenda was created in 2007 by Glencore International and D'Amico di Navigazione and, in June that year, took over the four 51,000dwt product tanker orders from Singapore's ST Shipping. ST had agreed a price of $49M in December 2006; Glenda picked them up for $47.5 and reckoned it had got a good deal with early delivery dates. It hasn't worked out and Glenda has got its money back. This week's cancellation may be followed by a second.
