Disputes between maritime businesses in Asia are at a high owing to the recession, Fairplay has learned. "We're going through a lot of disputes right now," Nick Sansom, the executive director of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration, told delegates at a dispute resolution conference in Singapore last week. Disputes typically stem from demurrage fees arising from charter parties, from cargo claims from bills of lading, memos of agreement drawn up from ship sales or from use ofthe Lloyd's Open Form in salvage-although these tend to settle. Timecharters are proving particularly contentious: they're one of the most fertile areas, they have led to a flood of work," said one lawyer.
