Stevenson first spoke out for people he thought were being treated unfairly was when he was in high school. He recalls: "It was during a day when students practised being in different positions in the local community. At that time, if a girl in high school became pregnant she had to leave. And I just voiced that I did not think that was right. There was a lot of flak, but I didn't back down."
