After four quarters in a row of negative growth, the US has finally posted a 3.5% increase in GDP for 3Q09. Exports (all modes) were up 14.7% and imports rose 16.4%, IHS Global Insight (IGI) reports, but trade is still a 0.5% drag on the overall growth statistics.rnKey components in the GDP improvement were US government and consumer spending, and inventory growth. Inventories added 0.9% to overall growth because they were falling less sharply than in 2Q09. They are still falling fast, which IGI believes will continue to support economic growth in the coming quarters as re-stocking continues.
