Greek ferry operators have written to shipping minister George Voulgarakis urging him to intervene in the European Commission's action against Hellenic Register of Shipping. The Union of Coastal Shipowners warned that many ferries would be unable to leave port in the next few months unless HRS was given back its authorisation to issue certificates. This would leave many islands cut off from the mainland. On 24 July, the EC decided not to renew the limited recognition it granted to HRS 10 years ago. This means that HRS is not allowed to issue new certificates for ships registered in Greece, Cyprus and Malta, the only EU states that have authorised the society to carry out surveys. The existing certificates, however, remain valid until expiration.
