There persists a global stock market volatility, a new phase of the US credit crunch and a continued softening of dry freight rates against falling Chinese demand. This week these provide a tumultuous backdrop to ongoing sale & purchase activity. The process of buying ships appears to have taken on new dimensions of risk and, in accordance with such concerns, brokers report a decline in active purchase interest for charter-free modern bulk carrier tonnage. While large sums of money remain available to be spent, more buyers seem prepared to wait and see how the current situation plays out. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the spot market uncertainty, there is currently more enthusiasm for charter-attached deals, which feature prominently in reports this week. The headline transaction in this respect was the purchase by Greek player Oceanaut of four modern bulkers from Irika Shipping for a reported $352M en bloc.
