Surrounded by naval firepower, a US-owned, Singapore-managed, Liberian-registered chemical tanker is taken over by five pirates. That's the reality of modern shipping, however we like to explain it. The 100th attack is surely time enough to stop the hand-wringingrnThis week, a chemical tanker was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden. A statement noted that the ship - the 97th to be attacked by pirates off Somalia this year - was en route through the recommended Maritime Security Patrol Area and was following a French Navy convoy.rnAs if that wasn't enough, there were three security guards on board to provide "logistical support and non-lethal defensive counter measures". It was later reported that as the five pirates hauled themselves over the side the British security guards jumped into the sea from the other side and were picked up by a French naval helicopter.
