New cruise and cargo shipping business opportunities are opening up because ships have been allowed direct access to Fuerteventura, one of the smaller of the seven Canary Islands.rnBut Madrid has been criticised for refusing to grant such Schengen status to sister island La Palma.rnCruise operators previously had to limit calls to larger ports in the Canaries. But Fuerteventura's new status means that ferry operator Naviera Armas is expected to begin a weekly ferry service during October, running the ferry Assalama to Tarfaya in Morocco.
