A senior government official in India's coastal state of Maharashtra has called for a radical overhaul of policies to enable ports to catch the economic boom.rnBanning strikes at ports features prominently in Commodore M K Bangar's recent list of reforms. Bangar, who works as a consultant for the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), gave his clarion call from Mumbai - the provincial capital and the country's financial centre.rnIndia's stock markets, including the Mumbai Exchange, took a severe battering the day before Bangar spoke to delegates. The ambiance at the Southern Asia Ports, Logistics and Shipping 2007 conference was upbeat in terms of confidence about India's ability to sustain GDP growth. The two-day event was organised by Transport Events Management of Malaysia.
