One area where Europe's shipbuilders lead their Asian competitors is in research and development commitment, according to Fincantieri chairman Corrado Antonini. Speaking at a Shipbuilders and Shiprepairers Association conference in London, Antonini said R&D is the lifeblood that fuels European shipyards, which "invest on average 10% of their turnover on research, development and innovation activities - a considerable sum if compared with the 0.66% of the Korean shipbuilders".
