Oil is much in the news again. January crude futures fell in the New York market, wiping out gains from previous sessions. The drop was mainly caused by forecasters predicting warmer weather in the forthcoming week or so. The fall makes it almost certain that OPEC will impose a further production cut of 500,000 barrels a day at its meeting in Abuja. Oil ministers from Iran, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia have all supported this move, fired with enthusiasm to protect a floor price of $60 a barrel.
