摘要

Indonesia and Malaysia are struggling to settle a dispute over oil rights before it grows into even more of a military threat. Already, both have sent warships to the disputed area (see map). Indonesia has deployed marines to the region and buzzed it with fighter jets, while and the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta was picketed on 7 March by demonstrators. Negotiators from the two normally cordial neighbours met on 22 and 23 March to discuss which country controls oil rights in the Sulawesi Sea, an expanse roughly 850 by 400km that is east of Borneo Island (shared by the two countries), north of Indonesia's Sulawesi Island and south of Mindanao Island, Philippines.
