Unusually dangerous waters appear to plague a tract of ocean outside the Indian port of Kolkata. During the past 30 years, more than 80 ships have sunk in exactly the same area, about 127 miles southeast of the port. But the draught at Sandheads, India's version of the Bermuda Triangle, is about 50m. Shipowners have said that, over recent decades, all of the vessels went down during rough weather. Some storm, Indian shipping figures tell Fairplay. Suspicions have grown that the ships were deliberately scuttled as part of a flourishing international racket. No one has ever bothered to undertake a study of any natural hazards at Sandheads, nor have any of the owners salvaged a wreck.
