US petroleum thirst is driven by its transport sector, which is in turn fuelled by the distinctly American adoration of gas-guzzling Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks. This equation may finally be changing, however, as US car buyers appear to be taking notice of the damage to their wallets from higher pump prices. As ever more of these behemoths have roared down highways, fuel efficiency per vehicle sold in the US has persistently dropped over the past decade, much to the joy of the tanker sector. But, according to a number of reports surfacing in recent weeks, higher gas prices are changing Americans' minds on SUVs. If so, this could play an important role in future US tanker demand.
