Shipbuilding is recovering, relying on Norway's technological edge. But the country's yards are still among the few in the world with spare capacity. Steel price increases are the most important reason. In the past year, Norway has gradually hauled itself out of a shipbuilding void. 2004 was a disastrous year all round, when new orders virtually evaporated - as did profit margins - and hundreds of workers were laid off. Now Norway is trying to cling to its technical edge lest its markets get siphoned off to Asia, eastern Europe and even South America.
