Spurred by new rules, lower taxes and better-trained crew, Mexico's fleet is revitalising. But most of the flag's ships today, Will Watson finds, are fishing vessels and coastal supply and crewing ships that are linked with the oil industry. The best way to describe the current Mexican flag fleet is 'an inch deep and a mile wide'. At present, there are 2,354 vessels registered, totalling just less than 1.6M gt, but most are fishing vessels and coastal supply and crewing ships that are dedicated to Mexico's offshore petroleum industry.
