Cyprus is hoping that its regional edge in shipmanagement will in time enable it to become an eastern Mediterranean shipping cluster on a par with hubs with similar ambitions such as Singapore in Asia and Rotterdam or Hamburg in Europe. The island is already a major base for multinational companies and has one of the five largest ship registers in the world, largely as a result of that edge. Some Cyprus insiders tell Fairplay that the wider region's interests and make-up are too diverse to generate a single cohesive business centre. But others insist that this lack of cohesion obscures plenty of shipping expertise.
