The full restoration of the Mississippi River's shipping capacity cannot come fast enough for US agricultural exporters, who are desperately hoping to minimise Hurricane Katrina losses. In its initial assessment, the American Farm Bureau conservatively estimated $1 Bn in direct impact on US crops and livestock, plus a $1 Bn indirect hit caused by the "waterway shipping crisis and soaring fuel prices".
