摘要

High and volatile oil prices are a major risk to the world economy. This was the warning given by the Commonwealth of Australia's treasurer at a meeting of the G20 in Beijing this week. Peter Costello told the meeting that with the emergence of new global economic powers, demands for energy and resources are going to increase. In response, Finance Minister Jin Renqing of China said the biggest of the rising economies has suffered only to a limited extent from high oil prices. But in the US, the price of oil is still comparatively high as another possible hurricane gathers strength as Fairplay goes to press. But inflation figures across the US economy rose significantly as consumer prices shot up an unexpectedly large 1.2% last month, on the back of these high energy costs.
