This was a profitable week for the tanker industry - especially for the crude oil carrying sector. The Baltic Dirty Tanker Index gained over 200 index points, or 11%, to reach 2170 in just a week. By contrast, the advance of the clean market slowed almost to a standstill with the Clean Index remaining at just under 1930. In all sectors however, there is scope for some further upside movement. The International Energy Agency (IEA) offered some succour to the oil market by agreeing that volumes of crude oil and oil products, not yet allocated from the 60M bbl made available to the market in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, will remain available to the market.
