The issue of ships using shoreside energy while in port has sparked a major controversy, both about its technical feasibility and whether it actually benefits the port environment, A recent report by the California Air Resources Board highlighted in Fairplay made clear that the effects of particulate emissions from ships in port can be damaging for local inhabitants living many miles from port. Cold ironing - taking power from the electric grid ashore and turning off engines and auxiliaries in port - is one solution, but opinions differ about its technical feasibility and whether it really is much more friendly to the local environment than the current practice.
