摘要

As the optimistic trade data continues to flow, Chile's shipping industry is concerned that whoever ends up at the helm in Santiago, the government might fail to resume port privatisation fast enough for the sector to keep pace internationally. "That [delay] could slow down port expansion as a whole," Chile-Maritime Chamber president Rodolfo Garcia warns Fairplay. Chile's privatisations have been quite successful, beginning with a terminal in San Antonio in the mid-1990s. Up next could be concessions for the still-public facilities in San Antonio and Valparaiso. The hot potato complicating the picture is the choice between single or multiple operators at a given port. That choice might have to wait until the new cabinet is in place, no earlier than mid-2006, following the 15 January presidential run-off election.
