Chile's second-largest largest shipping line, Compania Chilena de Navegacion Interoceanica, was like a vessel rolling in heavy seas before 2002 - but no longer. Today, the swells have calmed for CCNI, and losses have turned to profits, mainly because of diversification and a new corporate mindset. "We got out of our tempest," explains CCNI's CEO Beltran Urenda Salamanca, sitting down recently with Fairplay at his Valparaiso headquarters. "Three years ago, no bank would lend us $500,000," he continues. "Since then, we have restructured and positioned the company in large markets, with the belief that there is a place for a small company [versus a major international shipping line] if it is well organised and managed."
