Tasman Spirits third engineer George Koutsos, 52, is battling to find the strength to face challenges of a type he did not dream of when he started his seafaring career. The Greek seafarer is the helpless victim of a multi-faceted crisis that recently induced him to attempt suicide. Had there been any delay in-evacuating him to hospital from his eighth-floor room at the Karachi Pearl Continental Hotel, he would have died. Circumstantial evidence reveals that Koutsos tried to slit his neck and arm muscles with sharp pieces of broken glass in his hotel room. He was rushed to hospital with extensive bleeding for emergency surgery. Koutsos is being treated at the private Orthopaedic and Medical Institute (OMI) in Karachi for the injuries sustained during his 5 January suicide attempt, an additional criminal offence he is now faced with in addition to the one relating to last August's break-up of the Greek tanker Tasman Spirit.
