According to a 1996 book on sea-- faring vocabulary, women at sea were once considered to bring bad luck. Yet English-speaking mariners refer to their ships as 'she', regardless of the individual name or type of vessel. One explanation for this curious tradition says Mediterranean seamen, in whose languages 'ship' was a feminine noun, continued that habit when speaking English, and that their English-speaking counterparts adopted the fashion.
