The Korean peninsula has plunged into plutonium politics with revelations that South Korea did not report some of its nuclear experiments. Meanwhile big bangs have been heard recently in the communist North, which said they came from blasting for a hydro-electric dam. The world, however, continues to be perplexed about the North's nuclear capabilities. Even as North-South relations continue to be tense, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, who cashed in on anti-American sentiment to get elected, has been forced to backtrack as the prospect of American troop cuts loom. Amidst mounting problems, Roh has managed to survive attempts by the opposition to unseat him through an impeachment vote. He is now firmly in control and political stability is one bright spot in a scenario where the economy seems to have gone to sleep.
