After decades in which authority has progressively been stripped from the master, those in charge have suddenly recognised that leadership is back in fashion. Last month the Nautical Institute invited industry members to a seminar at Glasgow Nautical College to find out what leadership is all about. Peter Cooney, newly appointed non-executive director of Graig Ship Management and chairman of the seminar, told delegates in his opening speech: "We are yet again reactive rather than proactive and we're failing in leadership development." He said that there isn't enough training for leaders and certainly not for leaders in the maritime industry ashore. "I think senior officers on board still lack leadership training," he added. Rear Admiral Chris Stanford advised delegates that selection, training and appraisal are all important parts of ensuring that the right people are groomed for a leadership role throughout an organisation, not just at the pinnacle. He said that the industry has been aware of the human element in accidents and ship casualties, but it is less understood that the style of leadership, or the lack of it, may be a contributory factor in many cases. "If the industry needs a justification for maintaining a training budget for leadership and teamwork," he said, "and with pressures on the bottom line they undoubtedly do, they need look no further than the cost of accidents in terms of human life and monetary penalties."
