Neptune Orient Lines is back in the news with a splash after three years - for almost identical reasons. On March 23,2000, fairplay ran a cover story reporting NOL's efforts to claw back to sustained profitability after a torrid phase. As now, debts had accumulated and though there was no indication of the sale of American Eagle Tankers, assets had been sold to rake in cash in the face of mounting debts. Of course, Fairplay also highlighted the "vision" of then chief executive Flemming Jacobs of transforming the Singapore-listed company into a "world-class container transport and logistics powerhouse of the 21st Century".
