摘要

World-wide average earnings are now below $30,000 a day from a peak of $32,000 in the third week of May. And the latest dip in earnings began in the second half of June. Two aspects are to blame: South-East Asian coking coal and iron ore demand are at their lowest levels as the major steel mills scale down production for summer maintenance programmes. Meanwhile, port congestion is easing in both China and Brazil, increasing the volume of tonnage available in key loading areas in both the Pacific and the Atlantic basins. But brokers are expecting a recovery soon, especially when power stations in the Northern Hemisphere begin stocking up on thermal coal supplies ahead of winter. There is already some evidence that this is happening, with the Richards Bay to Rotterdam route advancing to around $11.50 per short ton at press time, from $ 11.20 last week.
