The first administrator of the Panama Canal since the US transferred full control, Alberto Aleman Zubieta tells Michele Labrut the long term is constantly on his mind. There is barely a day in which his name doesn't pop up in local or international newspapers and, although Alberto Aleman Zubieta is among Panama's most recognisable personalities - almost a household name there - the Panama Canal administrator is a very private man. That does not make him shy of being interviewed. Born into a traditional wealthy family whose ancestors came to Panama from Spain in the early 1800s, Aleman did not rise to stardom until 1996, when he became Panama Canal Commission (PCC) Administrator, proposed by Panama but named by US President Bill Clinton and ratified by the US Congress.
