India's recently released inland water policy points to greater participation by the private sector. Joint public-private sector development of new inland waterways through equity involvement in the Inland Water Transport Authority of India (IWAI) is likely. The government has given various sops to the private sector, including a ten-year tax holiday, 25-per cent depreciation - similar to ocean-going vessels - and 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI).
