It took Japan 14 years to progress from its first imports of Liquefied Natural Gas on an ex-ship basis in the late 1960s to the point, in 1983, where it began to transport as well as consume LNG. Today, about 70 per cent of global LNG shipments head for Japan. And Japan's Big Three shipping companies (MOL, NYK, K-Line) own or jointly own a fleet of 40 vessels out of a world-wide total of about 150. Japan therefore might appear to be the undisputed king of the LNG shipping market.
