Polish ports currently resemble construction sites, despite the difficulty in finding new partners and outside investors for terminal development. Poland needs to develop infrastructure and inland connections to attract investors, and needs investors' business to push for better connections. Port authorities are as active as financing allows. Szczecin-Swinoujscie is upgrading its facilities to improve cargo handling potential. At Katowicki Peninsula, four berths are being constructed with water depth of 10 m to handle the largest vessels able to reach Szczecin, while three river barge berths with 3-4 m water depth are projected. Handling capacity has been forecast at about 4M tonnes a year when the project is completed in 2002. The new handling/storage area will enable the port authority to cater for cargoes it has previously had to turn away. It is hoped that finance for the project will be partially covered by a World Bank loan, which is reported to have been viewed positively.
