News that Canadian shipbuilder Davie Industries has been taken over by a US-based consortium has added greater weight to cries for support from Ottawa. A report from the Industry Committee of the Canadian House of Commons called on the government to be more realistic about the country's shipbuilding industry. It said the government should "consult with all stakeholders of the sector to adopt and modify industrial policies that would assist shipbuilders in capturing niche markets." However it urged Ottawa not to engage "in a 'matching subsidy' battle with foreign governments."
